Korean War Memorial Moore Park

This is what you were looking at in yesterday’s post.

The dates are controversial.

THE dedication of a million-dollar Korean War Memorial in Moore Park was boycotted by about 600 veterans who felt betrayed by a dispute over when the war actually ended.

The monument commemorates diggers who served between 1950 and 1953, including the 340 who died in those years and the 18 Australians who died in the post-armistice period.

However, an alliance representing Korean War veterans said the plaque should have included the period from 1953 to 1956, when Australian troops were withdrawn. It claimed that saying the war ended in 1953 was “denigrating their service”.

Bob Morris, president of the Korean War Veterans NSW Recognition Committee, said the inaccuracy was in clear contravention to legislation and invited the Minister assisting the Premier on Veterans Affairs, Graham West, to discuss the matter before the dedication…

Lord Mayor Clover Moore wrote to the Premier, Nathan Rees, on behalf of Mr Morris on July 2, drawing his attention to claims that the committee had successfully campaigned to correct the dates. She wrote of how the Commonwealth Government now recognised the conflict did not end in 1953, and that people serving until April 19, 1956 were recognised as war veterans on active service.

  1. Hi, All.
My name’s Justin Sheedy. I was lucky enough to have my first book published recently at the Surry Hillls Library while I was resident near this magnificent new War Memorial. Walked past it every day as it happens…

I post here as my next book was, in part, inspired by an Australian war vet of the Korean War. …He said it, amazingly, was the best time of his life. ( ? ! )

He was a very young fighter pilot, great man, great presence…

See link of writing that blokes like him inspired.
